In the dying days of the Manchu Qing dynasty, a group of emperors’ Manchu concubines became China’s actual rulers. These shallow and vulgar women knew little to nothing about history, social reality and international affairs but were devoted to makeup and dressing up. As a result, the Manchu empire collapsed while China was semi-colonised by Japan and the West.

Now it seems a similar episode is replaying on a global scale.
